Earthquakes
One of the greatest fears in Japan is earthquake. Like
California, Japan lies in an earthquake zone, where two plates of
the earth’s crust meet. There are tremors every day. Though most
are too small that they are unnoticeable. From time to time there is
a much larger tremor. Lights swing, windows rattle and small items
fall off shelves.
Tokyo, Japan’s capital, lies close to an earthquake epicenter.
The Great Earthquake of 1923 destroyed the city and killed over
100,000 people. Experts predict that devastating earthquakes will
continue to occur about once every 70 years.
