Over 12 000 years ago, Stone Age people called Ainu lived in Japan.
Other people began to move into Japan from northeast Asia and
southern China. The Ainu were pushed northwards. Today about 24 000
Ainu people still live on Hokkaido. The earliest records about Japan
are 1700 years old. The writers described a country with women
